Global Fund HIV/AIDS Program Deliver HIV/AIDS program to communities (Strengthening STI Case Management) - Mobilise and empower communities to participate in health development and take responsibility for their own health.
- Collect and analyze data, identify the community's health needs and priorities to take appropriate measures.
- Intensify the prevention and control of STIs and the HIV/AIDS epidemic through increased community awareness and mobilization, including behavioral changes with regard to sexuality, marriage and cultural practices.

Global Fund Malaria Program Deliver Malaria Case Management services to the Grass Roots levels - Improving the quality of malaria case management in private health units.
- Strengthening capacity for the effective delivery of prevention, care and support services for malaria control among slum populations in the rural areas of Mbarara.
- Orientation of village health teams and community own resource persons on malaria prevention and need for proper treatment of malaria.
- Establish intersectoral links with local government and private stakeholders in malaria control.

Improving Utilization of VCT Services & Advocating for Positive Behavioral Change
  • Deliver HCT services to 13,000 adults
  • Ensure that 4,500 secondary school students receive community outreach programs on abstinence.

    In the 5 sub-counties of Rugaaga, Ngarama, Kabingo, Nyakitunda and Nyakayojo in Isingiro and Mbarara Districts respectively. UPHOLD 2005-2006 - HCT a total of 6,065 people have been counseled, 5,175 tested (-890) and 5,175 given results, while a total of 352 were positive. The prevalence rate is 6.8%.
    - A total of 159 couples counseled and tested of which 32 are discordant couples
    - 7 drama groups which also act as post test clubs have been formed in communities whereby at least every Sub County has a Post Test Club.
    - 11,172 or 13,452 have been reached with messages related to HIV/AIDS in communities.
    - 300 community volunteers have been oriented and help in community mobilization.
    - 30 Community Volunteer Counselors have been trained. These are helping in community mobilization and counseling and can be used further to offer psychosocial support during follow up of HIV positive clients.
    - 4 HCT static sites have been established at Nyakitunda HCIII, Bugashe (Nyakayojo HCIII), Mabona HCIII and MMH.
    - 10 health workers have been trained on counseling and laboratory diagnosis for HIV.
    - 45 Local leaders and 45 religious leaders have been sensitized about the project.
    - MMHF been able to provide Septrin Prophylaxis to those who are HIV positive and leave some at the 3 HCT static sites to provide to those who are HIV positive in communities.
    - MMHF has been able to establish partnership with DDHS, school management teams, local leaders such that this has created ownership of the project which will ensure sustainability.
    Mbarara CSO Consortium to Prevent HIV/AIDS through Promotion of Primary and Secondary Abstinence and Behavioral Change among the Youth
  • 3,584 engaged, newly married couples will be served with Behavioral Change Communication advocating for marital fidelity & 500 will be counseled & tested for HIV/AIDS.
  • By the end of February 2007, 18,000 youth out of school will have been reached with information on abstinence and responsible sexuality.

    In the 18 sub-counties of Kakoba, Nyamitanga, Kamukuzi, Bugamba, Ndeija, Rugando, Nyakayojo, Rubindi, Rwanyamahembe, Bubare, Rubaya, Kakiika and Biharwe in Mbarara District, Masha, Birere and Kabingo in Isingiro District, Sanga and Kazo in Kirihura district. MGLSD/CORE Initiative 2006-2007 - 18,766 youth out-of-school reached with messages on Abstinence and Behavior Change

  • By the end of June 2007, 18,000 sexually active adults aged 15-49 of whom 300 being couples will have received counseling, tested and HIV/AIDS results at a USAID supported site in the 5 sub counties of (Rugaaga, Kabingo, Nyakayojo, Nyakitunda and Ngarama) of Mbarara and Isingiro districts.
  • By the end of June 2007, 230 HIV positive mothers will have received PMTCT minimum package in the 5 sub counties of Nyakayojo, Kabingo, Rugaaga, Nyakitunda and Ngarama.
  • By the end of June 2007, 650 PHAs will have received HIV/AIDS palliative care in the 5 sub counties of Nyakayojo, Kabingo, Rugaaga, Nyakitunda and Ngarama.
  • By the end of June 2007, 300 OVCs will have received care and support in the 5 sub counties of Nyakayojo, Kabingo, Rugaaga, Nyakitunda and Ngarama. .

    - Good collaboration with Development Partners e.g. UPHOLD Regional Office, District Officials, MUTH, MJAP, Local Governments, Political, Local Leaders, Religious Leaders, Millennium Villages Project (UNDP) etc
    - Many Community members have welcomed HCT and actively participated by accepting to test & mobilize their family members
    - Under Home-based HCT and care more couples and pregnant mothers have been reached.
