Introduction
This is one of the Uphold Project activities
Mbarara and Isingiro districts are located in the South western Region of Uganda.
Through the Uganda’s efforts to fight against HIV/AIDS, (among African Countries)
Mayanja Memorial Hospital Foundation, being one of the key playsts works around the
Clock and targets the Ministry of Health strategies led through PMTCT, HCT, RCT,
ART, Palliative Care and working closely with DDHS’s Office and Mbarara Regional
referral Hospital.
It is through the above target that (UPHOLD) effected the training of these Health
Workers, to address the accessibility of service thus minimizing the spread, through
quality service delivery by the trained manpower

- To get Knowledge and Skills in Counselling.
- Learn how to test for HIV
- Get update on facts about HIV
- To get Certificates
- Get Skills in giving positive results
- To learn more about PEP
- To learn self care as a Counsellor.
Course Aim
To equip Participants with knowledge and skills, in HIV Counselling and Testing, (HCT)
to enable them offer quality HCT services to Individuals, Couples, Families, and the
Community in general
Course Objectives
- By the end of the course, the Participants will be able to;-
- Provide update information on HIV/AIDS to the Clients, Family members and Community.
- Offer quality counseling services in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support.
- Offer HCT using the different approaches and protocols in Uganda, including HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT), Routine Testing and Counselling (RTC), Home Based HCT (HBHCT) and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).
- Refer Clients for HIV/AIDS related prevention, care and support services.
Achievements and Lessons Learnt
- All the 13 Participants completed the course.
- All topics were covered as scheduled
- There was good interaction during the course between Participants and Trainers.
- There is high utilization of health services in Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital
- Staffs are committed, caring and practices their code of conduct.
- Counselling needs devotion
- There is high observation of infection control measures by the whole Staff and Students empowered by the availability of all the necessary supplies.
- Generally there is a good network between Government Unit and other NGOs.
Challenges
Most of the Counselling rooms are small
Recommendations
- These Health Workers should be given Supplies and start on their work immediately.
- Supervision should be intensified
- Mobilization Strategies should be effected such that positive results are achieved
